Wheat..White wheat markets failed to keep up with the surge in Chicago
futures this week, as bids were generally tempered by lack of fresh demand
and adequate farmer selling near the $5 mark. As a result, basis levels on
both old and new crop positions weakened dramatically. Recent demand helped
hold red spring wheat basis firm this week, while red winter basis drifted
against a higher board. New crop positions registered HTA activity.
Weekly Sales...USDA reported another week of lackluster demand, as soft
white wheat totals held near five-week lows. At 1.7 mb, the weekly tally
puts year-to-date sales at 101 mb and 44% ahead of a year ago. Red spring
wheat demand rebounded to 4.9 mb, the best weekly total for all classes and
placed current year sales 12% behind last year at 125 mb.
Barley...Another week and no new export demand registered for US barley,
with exporters working to load the only export sale to Japan. Domestic bids
did firm up this week, as quality concerns with corn have shifted demand to
barley.
